Short bio
I received a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Seville in 1987. Then, I joined the Department of “Ingenieria de Sistemas y Automatica” at the University of Malaga in 1988 and received a Ph.D. from this University in 1993. In 1991 I was at the Field Robotics Center, Robotics Institute, Carnegie Mellon University (USA) working on mobile robots as part of my Ph.D. Since 1996 I’ve been leading Spanish and European projects on mobile robotics and perception. Currently, I am the head of the MAPIR group and a full professor at the University of Malaga. My research interest includes mobile robot autonomous navigation, computer vision, and robotic olfaction. In these fields, I’ve published three books and more than 250 papers.
Ongoing projects I’m leading
- ARPEGGIO: Advanced Robotic Perception for Mapping and Localization (Sep’21 – Aug’24). (Funded by Spanish National Research Program)
- HOUNDBOT: Gas concentration mapping and gas source localization by a mobile robot (July 2021- June 2023). (Funded by Andalucian Goverment and FEDER)
