abstract = {In this paper, we present an attention mechanism for mobile robots to face the problem of place categorization. Our approach, which is based on active perception, aims to capture images with characteristic or distinctive details of the environment that can be exploited to improve the efficiency (quickness and accuracy) of the place categorization. To do so, at each time moment, our proposal selects the most informative view by controlling the line-of-sight of the robot’s camera through a pan-only unit. We root our proposal on an information maximization scheme, formalized as a next-best-view problem through a Markov Decision Process (MDP) model. The latter exploits the short-time estimated navigation path of the robot to anticipate the next robot’s movements and make consistent decisions. We demonstrate over two datasets, with simulated and real data, that our proposal generalizes well for the two main paradigms of place categorization (object-based and image-based), outperforming typical camera-configurations (fixed and continuously-rotating) and a pure-exploratory approach, both in quickness and accuracy.},

abstract = {This paper describes the design, implementation and evaluation of a novel circuitry that extends the popular Arduino UNO microcontroller board to facilitate multiple educational activities in engineering courses. In particular, the aim of this board, the UMA-AEB, is to minimize the overhead that is usually imposed on the students before they can conduct the actual exercises, yet retain the valuable experiences that could otherwise not be acquired with simulated experiments or inflexible electronic training-benches. The UMA-AEB is also meant to bring analog and digital electronics closer to other common disciplines in engineering, such as high-level programming languages (e.g. MATLAB) or Real-Time Operating Systems (e.g. FreeRTOS), by easing its connection to a personal computer for control and debugging. The features on the UMA-AEB range from simple input-output devices like a potentiometer, several buttons, eight individually addressable LEDs and a seven-segment display, to more advanced components like an SPI memory module for data-logging, a configurable resistive-inductive-capacitive (RLC) first and second order resonator, and a bidirectional analog-digital interface supporting -10 to +10 V, a common range for most college-level laboratory classes. The resulting design can be manufactured at a significantly lower cost than other similar devices (around 50€ not considering labor costs such as component-soldering and basic diagnoses), and both simulation and real tests have demonstrated that the obtained functionality agrees accurately enough with our design requirements after suitable calibration methods. We intend to use the board in very diverse subjects in the next years; up to date, we have already included it in a control systems course (graduate) and in embedded real-time courses (undergraduate and master), as well as student dissertation projects and a web-accessible electronics-laboratory. Hence, we present the possibilities of our shield for these and other courses and also some educational results obtained in the past academic years.},

abstract = {This paper presents the mVision toolbox to the lecturers’ community and computer vision practitioners, which is publicly available at https://github.com/jotaraul/mVision. mVision provides a number of intuitive Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs) to apply different computer vision techniques like: image smoothing or enhancement, edge detection, segmentation into regions, etc. The interesting point of these GUIs is that they offer handy ways to select and configure different popular algorithms and, in addition to the results of their execution (e.g. detected edges or regions), they also provide intermediate information that is useful for understanding what it is underneath. With these features, the toolbox attempts to fill the gap between low level implementations of computer vision techniques, which are efficient resources but hard to leverage for teaching purposes, and high level interfaces that bring to you just the output of these techniques, neglecting interesting intermediate results. In this way, mVision aims to become an engaging tool for both lecturers, pursuing a better and quicker understanding of the basis of these techniques, and computer vision students and practitioners seeking to enhance that basis. The toolbox is written for MATLAB, a popular software application in academia. This work also yields directions about its utilization for educational purposes, and describes our experience with it in undergraduate and graduate courses since 2009.},

abstract = {Gas source localization (GSL) is one of the most important and direct applications of a gas sensitive mobile robot, and consists in searching for one or multiple volatile emission sources with a mobile robot that has improved sensing capabilities (i.e. olfaction, wind flow, etc.). This work adresses GSL by employing a teleoperated mobile robot, and focuses on which search strategy is the most suitable for this teleoperated approach. Four different search strategies, namely chemotaxis, anemotaxis, gas-mapping, and visual-aided search, are analyzed and evaluated according to a set of proposed indicators (e.g. accuracy, efficiency, success rate, etc.) to determine the most suitable one for a human-teleoperated mobile robot. Experimental validation is carried out employing a large dataset composed of over 150 trials where volunteer operators had to locate a gas-leak in a virtual environment under various and realistic environmental conditions (i.e. different wind flow patterns and gas source locations). We report different findings, from which we highlight that, against intuition, visual-aided search is not always the best strategy, but depends on the environmental conditions and the operator's ability to understand how gas distributes.},

The objective is to expand the range of applications where robotics telepresence can be applied, including those related to the detection of volatile chemical substances (e.g. land-mine detection, explosive deactivation, operations in noxious environments, etc.). Concretely, we analyze how the sense of smell can be integrated in the telepresence loop, covering the digitization of the gases and wind flow present in the remote environment, the transmission through the communication network, and their display at the user location. Experiments under different environmental conditions are presented to validate the proposed telepresence system when localizing a gas emission leak at the remote environment.},

abstract = {This thesis covers several aspects of artificial or robotic olfaction, that is, sensing information about the composition of the air surrounding an automated system. First, we have developed an electronic nose, an instrument that combines low-performance gas sensors with a classification algorithm to measure and identify gases by their chemical signature. Although this technology already existed previously, a new approach is applied that seeks to reduce dimensions and consumption in order to be installed in mobile robots, whilst also increasing the number of detectable gases by means of a modular design. Subsequently, we have explored a possible optimal strategy for finding gas leaks with a robot equipped with this type of electronic noses. In particular, we have carried out several experiments based on teleoperation to understand how the robot sensors affect the success of the task, allowing us to derive an algorithm to generate gas-maps (i.e. physical gas distribution maps) with autonomous robots based on the observed human search behavior: maximizing the known information about the environment. The main virtue of this method, besides performing an optimal exploration of the environment, is its ability to operate in very complex environments and subject to wind currents using a new method that is also presented in this thesis. Finally, two application cases are also presented in which we automatically identify and qualify the subjective air quality in urban environments.
