MoveCare: Multiple-actOrs Virtual Empathic CARgiver for the Elder(Jun’17–Jan’20)
International Project
International Project
MOVECARE aims at supporting the independent living of the elders at home; monitoring their daily activities while promoting their cognitive, physical, and social activities. The MAPIR group is the leader of one of the workpackages of the project with the goal of enhancing the Giraff robot, turning it into an autonomous actor within the MOVECARE framework.
Navigational, perceptual, and interaction skills are the key points in order to endow a mobile robot with the needed abilities to assist elder people at home. The MAPIR group leads the Workpackage 4 with this aim, coordinating the efforts of 11 partners, from which the Universities of Oxford, Plymouth, and the Abacus company are, with the MAPIR group, the task leaders. The major output of this workpackage is the development of the robot abilities to (i) perform safe, reliabily and fully autonomous within home environments, (ii) densenly reconstruct and label both the static and dynamic elements of the environment around the user (referred below as geometry and object semantics), and (iii) recover and recognize user movements and gestures (user semantics).
The project’s Kick-off meeting was held in Milan by the University of Milano in January 18th and 19th: two intense days of presentations, talks and brainstorming to start the ambitious tasks included in MoveCare. There, the partners found a great opportunity to gather together and exchange ideas, concerns and collaboration plans for the next months. We also had the opportunity of visiting KORIAN facilities and some of their flats that are set up for elders. Next meeting will be held in Extremadura by the Consejería de Salud y Política Social (Junta of Extremadura) in April.

abstract = {Semantic maps augment traditional representations of robot workspaces, typically based on their geometry and/or topology, with meta-information about the properties, relations and functionalities of their composing elements. A piece of such information could be: fridges are appliances typically found in kitchens and employed to keep food in good condition. Thereby, semantic maps allow for the execution of high-level robotic tasks in an efficient way, e.g. “Hey robot, Store the leftover salad”. This paper presents ViMantic, a novel semantic mapping architecture for the building and maintenance of such maps, which brings together a number of features as demanded by modern mobile robotic systems, including: (i) a formal model, based on ontologies, which defines the semantics of the problem at hand and establishes mechanisms for its manipulation; (ii) techniques for processing sensory information and automatically populating maps with, for example, objects detected by cutting-edge CNNs; (iii) distributed execution capabilities through a client–server design, making the knowledge in the maps accessible and extendable to other robots/agents; (iv) a user interface that allows for the visualization and interaction with relevant parts of the maps through a virtual environment; (v) public availability, hence being ready to use in robotic platforms. The suitability of ViMantic has been assessed using Robot@Home, a vast repository of data collected by a robot in different houses. The experiments carried out consider different scenarios with one or multiple robots, from where we have extracted satisfactory results regarding automatic population, execution times, and required size in memory of the resultant semantic maps.},

abstract = {This paper presents the Robot-at-Home dataset (Robot@Home), a collection of raw and processed sensory data from domestic settings aimed at serving as a benchmark for semantic mapping algorithms through the categorization of objects and/or rooms. The dataset contains 87,000+ time-stamped observations gathered by a mobile robot endowed with a rig of four RGB-D cameras and a 2D laser scanner. Raw observations have been processed to produce different outcomes also distributed with the dataset, including 3D reconstructions and 2D geometric maps of the inspected rooms, both annotated with the ground truth categories of the surveyed rooms and objects. The proposed dataset is particularly suited as a testbed for object and/or room categorization systems, but it can be also exploited for a variety of tasks, including robot localization, 3D map building, SLAM, and object segmentation. Robot@Home is publicly available for the research community at http://mapir.isa.uma.es/work/robot-at-home-dataset.},

abstract = {In robotics, semantic mapping refers to the construction ofa rich representation of the environment that includes high level infor-mation needed by the robot to accomplish its tasks. Building a semanticmap requires algorithms to process sensor data at different levels: geo-metric, topological and object detections/categories, which must be inte-grated into an unified model. This paper describes a robotic architecturethat successfully builds such semantic maps for indoor environments. Forthis purpose, within a ROS-based ecosystem, we apply a state-of-the-artConvolutional Neural Network (CNN), concretely YOLOv3, for detect-ing objects in images. The detection results are placed within a geometricmap of the environment making use of a number of modules of the ar-chitecture: robot localization, camera extrinsic calibration, data form adepth camera, etc. We demonstrate the suitability of the proposed frame-work by building semantic maps of several home environments from theRobot@Home dataset, using Unity 3D as a tool to visualize the maps aswell as to provide future robotic developments.},

abstract = {We present LaLaLoc to localise in environments without the need for prior visitation, and in a manner that is robust to large changes in scene appearance, such as a full rearrangement of furniture. Specifically, LaLaLoc performs localisation through latent representations of room layout. LaLaLoc learns a rich embedding space shared between RGB panoramas and layouts inferred from a known floor plan that encodes the structural similarity between locations. Further, LaLaLoc introduces direct, cross-modal pose optimisation in its latent space. Thus, LaLaLoc enables fine-grained pose estimation in a scene without the need for prior visitation, as well as being robust to dynamics, such as a change in furniture configuration. We show that in a domestic environment LaLaLoc is able to accurately localise a single RGB panorama image to within 8.3cm, given only a floor plan as a prior.},

abstract = {Assistive robots collaborating with people demand strong Human-Robot interaction capabilities. In this way, recognizing the person the robot has to interact with is paramount to provide a personalized service and reach a satisfactory end-user experience. To this end, face recognition: a non-intrusive, automatic mechanism of identification using biometric identifiers from an user’s face, has gained relevance in the recent years, as the advances in machine learning and the creation of huge public datasets have considerably improved the state-of-the-art performance. In this work we study different open-source implementations of the typical components of state-of-the-art face recognition pipelines, including face detection, feature extraction and classification, and propose a recognition system integrating the most suitable methods for their utilization in assistant robots. Concretely, for face detection we have considered MTCNN, OpenCV’s DNN, and OpenPose, while for feature extraction we have analyzed InsightFace and Facenet. We have made public an implementation of the proposed recognition framework, ready to be used by any robot running the Robot Operating System (ROS). The methods in the spotlight have been compared in terms of accuracy and performance in common benchmark datasets, namely FDDB and LFW, to aid the choice of the final system implementation, which has been tested in a real robotic platform.},

abstract = {Holistic Image Descriptors (HIDs) are compact representations of a whole image that, being suitable for Place Recognition, are not appropriate for accurate Visual Localization. The most successful HIDs are those extracted from Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) like VGG, ResNet, InceptionV4 or NetVLAD. Very recently, the equivariance property has been proposed to reflect how image 2D transformations (e.g. rotation, flip, scale changes) influence the descriptor [17]. Our work experimentally analyzes whether such property can be a good indicator of the suitability of the existing CNN-based HID for estimating changes in the camera pose, which produces more complex transformations of the image than the pure transformations analyzed in [17]. The results we report here are a preliminary work in the context of an ongoing project towards appearance-based localization of autonomous mobile robots.},

ocially acceptable way. Our proposal focuses on real world indoor environments where the usual presence of
ultiple humans and obstacles notably rise the complexity of the approach action. We first deal with the problem of accurately estimating the 3D poses of all humans in the work space (positions and orientations), to then focus on the estimation of the most appropriate navigation goal from which the robot should start the interaction with the user. For the latter, we define a cost function that, accounting for multiple proxemic parameters and complying with the restrictions inherent of a robot navigating in a human environment, enables ascertaining an optimal solution. Different experiments are presented to demonstrate the feasibility of our proposal to work under real world conditions.},

abstract = {This work proposes a robotic object recognition system that takes advantage of the contextual information latent in human-like environments in an online fashion. To fully leverage context, it is needed perceptual information from (at least) a portion of the scene containing the objects of interest, which could not be entirely covered by just an one-shot sensor observation. Information from a larger portion of the scenario could still be considered by progressively registering observations, but this approach experiences difficulties under some circumstances, e.g. limited and heavily demanded computational resources, dynamic environments, etc. Instead of this, the proposed recognition system relies on an anchoring process for the fast registration and propagation of objects' features and locations beyond the current sensor frustum. In this way, the system builds a graph-based world model containing the objects in the scenario (both in the current and previously perceived shots), which is exploited by a Probabilistic Graphical Model (PGM) in order to leverage contextual information during recognition. We also propose a novel way to include the outcome of local object recognition methods in the PGM, which results in a decrease in the usually high CRF learning complexity. A demonstration of our proposal has been conducted employing a dataset captured by a mobile robot from restaurant-like settings, showing promising results.},
