abstract = {Large Language Models (LLMs) provide cognitive capabilities that enable robots to interpret and reason about their workspace, especially when paired with semantically rich representations like semantic maps. However, these models are prone to generating inaccurate or invented responses, known as hallucinations, that can produce an erratic robotic operation. This can be addressed by employing agentic workflows, structured processes that guide and refine the model’s output to improve response quality. This work formally defines and qualitatively analyzes the impact of three agentic workflows (LLM Ensemble, Self-Reflection, and Multi-Agent Reflection) on enhancing the reasoning capabilities of an LLM guiding a robotic system to perform object-centered planning. In this context, the LLM is provided with a pre-built semantic map of the environment and a query, to which it must respond by determining the most relevant objects for the query. This response can be used in a multitude of downstream tasks. Extensive experiments were carried out employing state-of-the-art LLMs and semantic maps generated from the widely-used datasets ScanNet and SceneNN. The results show that agentic workflows significantly enhance object retrieval performance, especially in scenarios requiring complex reasoning, with improvements averaging up to 10% over the baseline.},

abstract = {In the Industry 4.0 era, a myriad of sensors of diverse nature (temperature, pressure, etc.) is spreading throughout the entire value chain of industries, being potentially exploitable for multiple purposes, such as Predictive Maintenance (PdM): the just-in-time maintenance of industrial assets, which results in reduced operating costs, increased operator safety, etc. Nowadays, industrial processes require to be highly configurable, in order to proactively adapt their operation to diverse factors such as user needs, product updates or supply chain uncertainties. This limits current Industry 4.0-PdM solutions, typically consisting of ad-hoc developments intended for specific scenarios, i.e. they are designed to operate under certain conditions (configurations, employed sensors, etc.), being unable to manage changes in their setup. This paper presents a general Deep Learning (DL) architecture, MachNet, which deals with such heterogeneity and is able to address PdM problems of a diverse nature. The modularity of the proposed architecture enables it to deal with an arbitrary number of sensors of different types, also allowing the integration of prior information (age of assets, material type, etc.), which clearly affects performance and is often neglected. In practice, our architecture effortlessly adapts to the assets’ specifications and to different PdM problems. That is, MachNet becomes an architectural template that can be instantiated for a given scenario. We tested our proposal in two different PdM-related problems: Health State (HS) and Remaining-useful-Life (RuL) estimation, achieving in both cases comparable or superior performance to other state-of-the-art approaches, with the additional advantage of the generality that MachNet offers.},

abstract = {We present a new fast Ground Decoupled 3D Lidar Odometry (GND-LO) method. The particularity of GND-LO is that it takes advantage of the distinct spatial layout found in urban settings to efficiently recover the lidar movement in a decoupled manner. For that, the input scans are reduced to a set of planar patches extracted from the flat surfaces of the scene, found aplenty in these scenarios. These patches can be labeled as either belonging to the ground or walls, decoupling the estimation into two steps. First, the ground planes from each scan, clustered from the ground patches, are registered. Then, the motion estimation is completed by minimizing the distance between the wall patches and their corresponding points from the other scan, whose pairing is iteratively updated. GND-LO has demonstrated to perform both precisely and efficiently beating state-of-the-art approaches. Concretely, experiments on the popular KITTI dataset show that our proposal outperforms its competitors by reducing the average drift by 19% in translation and 4% in rotation. This is achieved by running in real-time without needing GPU or optimized multi-threading, as it is commonplace in the literature.},

This paper presents Robot@Home2, an enhanced version of the Robot@Home dataset, aimed at improving usability and functionality for developing and testing mobile robotics and computer vision algorithms. Robot@Home2 consists of three main components. Firstly, a relational database that states the contextual information and data links, compatible with Standard Query Language. Secondly,a Python package for managing the database, including downloading, querying, and interfacing functions. Finally, learning resources in the form of Jupyter notebooks, runnable locally or on the Google Colab platform, enabling users to explore the dataset without local installations. These freely available tools are expected to enhance the ease of exploiting the Robot@Home dataset and accelerate research in computer vision and robotics.},

abstract = {In this paper we present a new way to compute the odometry of a 3D lidar in real-time. Due to the significant relation between these sensors and the rapidly increasing sector of autonomous vehicles, 3D lidars have improved in recent years, with modern models producing data in the form of range images. We take advantage of this ordered format to efficiently estimate the trajectory of the sensor as it moves in 3D space. The proposed method creates and leverages a flatness image in order to exploit the information found in flat surfaces of the scene. This allows for an efficient selection of planar patches from a first range image. Then, from a second image, keypoints related to said patches are extracted. This way, our proposal computes the ego-motion by imposing a coplanarity constraint between pairs <point, plane> whose correspondences are iteratively updated. The proposed algorithm is tested and compared with state-of-the-art ICP algorithms. Experiments show that our proposal, running on a single thread, can run 5× faster than a multi-threaded implementation of GICP, while providing a more accurate localization. A second version of the algorithm is also presented, which reduces the drift even further while needing less than half of the computation time of GICP. Both configurations of the algorithm run at frame rates common for most 3D lidars, 10 and 20 Hz on a standard CPU.},

abstract = {In this paper, we present an attention mechanism for mobile robots to face the problem of place categorization. Our approach, which is based on active perception, aims to capture images with characteristic or distinctive details of the environment that can be exploited to improve the efficiency (quickness and accuracy) of the place categorization. To do so, at each time moment, our proposal selects the most informative view by controlling the line-of-sight of the robot’s camera through a pan-only unit. We root our proposal on an information maximization scheme, formalized as a next-best-view problem through a Markov Decision Process (MDP) model. The latter exploits the short-time estimated navigation path of the robot to anticipate the next robot’s movements and make consistent decisions. We demonstrate over two datasets, with simulated and real data, that our proposal generalizes well for the two main paradigms of place categorization (object-based and image-based), outperforming typical camera-configurations (fixed and continuously-rotating) and a pure-exploratory approach, both in quickness and accuracy.},

abstract = {In this paper we present the first fast optimality certifier for the non-minimal version of the Relative Pose problem for calibrated cameras from epipolar constraints. The proposed certifier is based on Lagrangian duality and relies on a novel closed-form expression for dual points. We also leverage an efficient solver that performs local optimization on the manifold of the original problem's non-convex domain. The optimality of the solution is then checked via our novel fast certifier. The extensive conducted experiments demonstrate that, despite its simplicity, this certifiable solver performs excellently on synthetic data, repeatedly attaining the (certified a posteriori) optimal solution and shows a satisfactory performance on real data.},

abstract = {Jupyter notebooks are recently emerging as a valuable pedagogical resource in academy, being adopted in educational institutions worldwide. This is mainly due to their ability to combine the expressiveness of traditional explanations from textbooks, with the interaction capabilities of software applications, which provides numerous benefits for both students and lecturers of different fields. One of the areas that could benefit from their adoption is such of mobile robotics, whose recent popularity has resulted in an increasing demand of trained practitioners with a solid theoretical and practical background. Therefore, there is a need of high quality learning materials adapted to modern tools and methodologies. With that in mind, this work explores how the introduction of Jupyter notebooks in undergraduate mobile robotic courses contributes to improve both teaching and learning experiences. For that, we first present a series of (publicly available) educational notebooks encompassing a variety of topics relevant for robotics, with a particular emphasis in the study of mobile robots and commonly used sensors. Those documents have been built from the ground up to take advantage of the Jupyter Notebook framework, bridging the typical gap between theoretical frame and interactive code. We also present a case study describing the notebooks usage in undergraduate courses at University of Málaga, including a discussion on the promising results and findings obtained.},

abstract = {Semantic maps augment traditional representations of robot workspaces, typically based on their geometry and/or topology, with meta-information about the properties, relations and functionalities of their composing elements. A piece of such information could be: fridges are appliances typically found in kitchens and employed to keep food in good condition. Thereby, semantic maps allow for the execution of high-level robotic tasks in an efficient way, e.g. “Hey robot, Store the leftover salad”. This paper presents ViMantic, a novel semantic mapping architecture for the building and maintenance of such maps, which brings together a number of features as demanded by modern mobile robotic systems, including: (i) a formal model, based on ontologies, which defines the semantics of the problem at hand and establishes mechanisms for its manipulation; (ii) techniques for processing sensory information and automatically populating maps with, for example, objects detected by cutting-edge CNNs; (iii) distributed execution capabilities through a client–server design, making the knowledge in the maps accessible and extendable to other robots/agents; (iv) a user interface that allows for the visualization and interaction with relevant parts of the maps through a virtual environment; (v) public availability, hence being ready to use in robotic platforms. The suitability of ViMantic has been assessed using Robot@Home, a vast repository of data collected by a robot in different houses. The experiments carried out consider different scenarios with one or multiple robots, from where we have extracted satisfactory results regarding automatic population, execution times, and required size in memory of the resultant semantic maps.},

abstract = {This article presents a visual–inertial dataset gathered in indoor and outdoor scenarios with a handheld custom sensor rig, for over 80 min in total. The dataset contains hardware-synchronized data from a commercial stereo camera (Bumblebee®2), a custom stereo rig, and an inertial measurement unit. The most distinctive feature of this dataset is the strong presence of low-textured environments and scenes with dynamic illumination, which are recurrent corner cases of visual odometry and simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) methods. The dataset comprises 32 sequences and is provided with ground-truth poses at the beginning and the end of each of the sequences, thus allowing the accumulated drift to be measured in each case. We provide a trial evaluation of five existing state-of-the-art visual and visual–inertial methods on a subset of the dataset. We also make available open-source tools for evaluation purposes, as well as the intrinsic and extrinsic calibration parameters of all sensors in the rig. The dataset is available for download at https://mapir.isa.uma.es/work/uma-visual-inertial-dataset},

abstract = {Olfactory telerobotics consists in augmenting the sensing capabilities of a conventional teleoperated mobile-robot to acquire information about the surrounding air (i.e. smell, wind-speed, etc.) in addition to the usual audio and video streams. Conceptually, this allows for new and improved applications, among which the most relevant are those related to gas-source localization (GSL). That is, searching through telerobotics for one or multiple gas-emission sources, such as hazardous gas-leaks in industrial facilities or the CO2 signature of trapped survivors in collapsed buildings. Notwithstanding, both the needed sensing-technology for the robot as well as the olfactory feedback-interfaces for the human operator are relatively recent, and might still not meet all the requirements of such applications. This work is therefore meant to assess the current feasibility of olfactory telerobotics to address real-world GSL problems, and accordingly, to determine which aspects play the most important role for its success, or otherwise, might be constraining its usefulness. We have collected to this end a dataset composed of 60 experiments where volunteer operators had to locate and identify hidden gas-source among several identical candidates with an olfaction-enabled robot and under realistic environmental conditions (i.e. uncontrolled and natural gas-distributions). We analyse this data to determine the overall search accuracy and intuitiveness of the system, considering that none of the operators had any prior experience with it, and study the importance of the employed sensory-feedback and how they were employed during the experiments. We finally report different findings, from which we highlight that the tested telerobotics system allowed the operators to correctly identify the source in 3 out of 4 attempts, and that the underlying human search-strategy appears to be a probabilistic-driven behaviour that favours semantic and visual information over the robot’s gas and wind measurements.},

abstract = {Abstract Visual place recognition is the task of automatically recognizing a previously visited location through its appearance, and plays a key role in mobile robotics and autonomous driving applications. The difficulty of recognizing a revisited location increases with appearance variations caused by weather, illumination or point of view changes. In this paper we present a convolutional neural network (CNN) embedding to perform place recognition, even under severe appearance changes. The network maps images to a low dimensional space where images from nearby locations map to points close to each other, despite differences in visual appearance caused by the aforementioned phenomena. In order for the network to learn the desired invariances, we train it with triplets of images selected from datasets which present a challenging variability in visual appearance. Our proposal is validated through extensive experimentation that reveals better performance than state-of-the-art methods. Importantly, though the training phase is computationally demanding, its online application is very efficient.},

abstract = {Semantic maps augment metric-topological maps with meta-information, i.e. l semantic knowledge aimed at the planning and execution of high-level robotic tasks. Semantic knowledge typically encodes human-like concepts, like types of objects and rooms, which are connected to sensory data when symbolic representations of percepts from the robot workspace are grounded to those concepts. Such a symbol grounding is usually carried out by algorithms that individually categorize each symbol and provide a crispy outcome – a symbol is either a member of a category or not. Such approach is valid for a variety of tasks, but it fails at: (i) dealing with the uncertainty inherent to the grounding process, and (ii) jointly exploiting the contextual relations among concepts (e.g. microwaves are usually in kitchens). This work provides a solution for probabilistic symbol grounding that overcomes these limitations. Concretely, we rely on Conditional Random Fields (CRFs) to model and exploit contextual relations, and to provide measurements about the uncertainty coming from the possible groundings in the form of beliefs (e.g. an object can be categorized (grounded) as a microwave or as a nightstand with beliefs 0.6 and 0.4, respectively). Our solution is integrated into a novel semantic map representation called Multiversal Semantic Map (MvSmap), which keeps the sets of different groundings, or universes, as instances of ontologies annotated with the obtained beliefs for their posterior exploitation. The suitability of our proposal has been proven with the Robot@Home dataset, a repository that contains challenging multi-modal sensory information gathered by a mobile robot in home environments.},

abstract = {In clinical practice, patients’ balance can be assessed using standard scales. Two of the most validated clinical tests for measuring balance are the Timed Up and Go (TUG) test and the MultiDirectional Reach Test (MDRT). Nowadays, inertial sensors (IS) are employed for kinematic analysis of functional tests in the clinical setting, and have become an alternative to expensive, 3D optical motion capture systems. In daily clinical practice, however, IS-based setups are yet cumbersome and inconvenient to apply. Current depth cameras have the potential for such application, presenting many advantages as, for instance, being portable, low-cost and minimally-invasive. This paper aims at experimentally validating to what extent this technology can substitute IS for the parameterization and kinematic analysis of the TUG and the MDRT tests. Twenty healthy young adults were recruited as participants to perform five different balance tests while kinematic data from their movements were measured by both a depth camera and an inertial sensor placed on their trunk. The reliability of the camera’s measurements is examined through the Interclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC), whilst the Pearson Correlation Coefficient (r) is computed to evaluate the correlation between both sensor’s measurements, revealing excellent reliability and strong correlations in most cases.},

The aim of the project was to assess the robustness and validity of the mobile robotic telepresence (MRP) system Giraff as a means to support elderly and to foster their social interaction and participation. Embracing the idea of user-centered product refinement, the robot was tested over long periods of time in real homes. As such, the system development was driven by a strong involvement of elderly and their caregivers but also by technical challenges associated with deploying the robot in real-world contexts. The results of the 42-months-long evaluation is a system suitable for use in homes rather than a generic system suitable, for example, in office environments.},

abstract = {This paper presents the Robot-at-Home dataset (Robot@Home), a collection of raw and processed sensory data from domestic settings aimed at serving as a benchmark for semantic mapping algorithms through the categorization of objects and/or rooms. The dataset contains 87,000+ time-stamped observations gathered by a mobile robot endowed with a rig of four RGB-D cameras and a 2D laser scanner. Raw observations have been processed to produce different outcomes also distributed with the dataset, including 3D reconstructions and 2D geometric maps of the inspected rooms, both annotated with the ground truth categories of the surveyed rooms and objects. The proposed dataset is particularly suited as a testbed for object and/or room categorization systems, but it can be also exploited for a variety of tasks, including robot localization, 3D map building, SLAM, and object segmentation. abstract = {This work addresses the development and application of a novel approach, called Sparser Relative Bundle Adjustment (SRBA), which exploits the inherent flexibility of the relative BA (RBA) framework to devise a continuum of strategies, ranging from RBA with linear graphs to classic BA in global coordinates, where submapping with local maps emerges as a natural intermediate solution. This method leads to graphs that can be optimized in bounded-time even at loop
closures, regardless of the loop length. Furthermore, it is shown that the pattern in which relative coordinate variables
are defined among keyframes has a significant impact on the graph optimization problem. By using the proposed
scheme, optimization can be done more efficiently than in standard RBA, allowing the optimization of larger local
maps for any given maximum computational cost. The main algorithms involved in the graph management, along
with their complexity analyses, are presented to prove their bounded-time nature. One key advance of the present
work is the demonstration that, under mild assumptions, the spanning trees for every single keyframe in the map
can be incrementally built by a constant-time algorithm, even for arbitrary graph topologies. We validate our proposal
within the scope of visual stereo SLAM by developing a complete system that includes a front-end that seamlessly
integrates several state-of-the-art computer vision techniques such as ORB features and bag-of-words, along with a
decision scheme for keyframe insertion and a SRBA-based back-end that operates as graph optimizer. Finally, a set of
experiments in both indoor and outdoor conditions is presented to test the capabilities of this approach. Open-source

abstract = {Setting-out is a crucial and frequently repeated process in construction and civil engineering. It is carried out by qualified operators who, making use of surveying stations, identify reference points to guide workers in their tasks. In this paper, we focus on the particular case of setting-out road/train tunnels and propose a system that automatically performs the setting-out operation of the tunnel section to be perforated. The presented system, called Tunnel Continuous Setout (TCS), integrates a scanning device that surveys the excavation front and a laser projector that continuously displays the actual tunnel section computed as the intersection between the surveyed terrain and the planned tunnel section. Thus, the topographer intervention is only required for the precise positioning of the TCS device at the beginning of each working stretch, which depends on the operational range of its components (limited to 25 meters in the current implementation). A prototype of the TCS system has been employed in a real construction site proving its benefits and advantages with respect to the traditional setting-out techniques.},

abstract = {Image registration, and more generally scene registration, needs to be solved in mobile robotics for a number of tasks including localization, mapping, object recognition, visual odometry and loop-closure. This paper presents a flexible strategy to register scenes based on its planar structure, which can be used with different sensors that acquire 3D data like LIDAR, time-of-flight cameras, RGB-D sensors and stereo vision. The proposed strategy is based on the segmentation of the planar surfaces from the scene, and its representation using a graph which stores the geometric relationships between neighbouring planar patches. Uncertainty information from the planar patches is exploited in a hierarchical fashion to improve both the robustness and the efficiency of registration. Quick registration is achieved in indoor structured scenarios, offering advantages like a compact representation, and flexibility to adapt to different environments and sensors. Our method is validated with different sensors: a hand-held RGB-D camera and an omnidirectional RGB-D sensor; and for different applications: from visual-range odometry to loop closure and SLAM.},

abstract = {This paper presents a reactive navigator for wheeled mobile robots moving on a flat surface which takes into account both the actual 3D shape of the robot and the 3D surrounding obstacles. The robot volume is modelled by a number of prisms consecutive in height, and the detected obstacles, which can be provided by different kinds of range sensor, are segmented into these heights. Then, the reactive navigation problem is tackled by a number of concurrent 2D navigators, one for each prism, which are consistently and efficiently combined to yield an overall solution. Our proposal for each 2D navigator is based on the concept of the “Parameterized Trajectory Generator” which models the robot shape as a polygon and embeds its kinematic constraints into different motion models.
Extensive testing has been conducted in office-like and real house environments, covering a total distance of 18.5 km, to demonstrate the reliability and effectiveness of the proposed method. Moreover, additional experiments are performed to highlight the advantages of a 3D-aware reactive navigator. The implemented code is available under an open-source licence.},

abstract = {This paper presents a new dense method to compute the odometry of a free-flying range sensor in real time. The method applies the range flow constraint equation to sensed points in the temporal flowto derive the linear and angular velocity of the sensor in a rigid environment. Although this approach is applicable to any range sensor, we particularize its formulation to estimate the 3-D motion of a range camera. The proposed algorithm is tested with different image resolutions and compared with two state-of-the-art methods: generalized iterative closest point (GICP) [1] and robust dense visual odometry (RDVO) [2]. Experiments show that our approach clearly overperforms GICP which uses the same geometric input data, whereas it achieves results similar to RDVO, which requires both geometric and photometric data towork. Furthermore, experiments are carried out to demonstrate that our approach is able to estimate fast motions at 60 Hz running on a single CPU core, a performance that has never been reported in the literature. The algorithm is available online under an open source license so that the robotic community can benefit from it.},
